Help Needed!
We’re Taking a Stand on Tuesday at the Laguna Beach City Council
This Tuesday, July 6th at 6:00 pm, the Laguna Beach City Council will consider an appeal by City Councilwoman Verna Rollinger.  Councilwoman Rollinger feels that the City Council should be able to vote on billionaire Steven Udvar-Hazy’s plans to tear down the historic Coast Inn and Boom Boom Room and build his boutique hotel.  On May 12th, Audrey Prosser and I watched after testifying, as the city’s Planning Commission voted to approve the developer’s plans so he could begin construction in September.  This huge project was given the green light with little public input.  Now is your chance to help save gay life in Laguna Beach, and not let the Boom’s 61 years of history be bulldozed into the ocean.

Another Xian Twit Speaks His Mind Oklahoma City Councilman Brian Walters was the only person to vote NO on OK City’s gay pride permit request.  Comparing gays and lesbians to pedophiles, Walters said “I don’t want my vote to be construed as support, because I really don’t support that, the same way that I wouldn’t support a group of, say, pedophiles who wanted to assemble.  I would not vote yes on that either, [or] men who beat up their wives. California State University, Long Beach – Wednesday, April 28, 2010 – The faculty and staff of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Task Force at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) wish to express concern about the impact of recent campus climate issues on our university community.  Campus dialogue following the Chicana Feminism Conference hosted by the Conciencía Feminíl student organization on March 17-20, 2010 included homophobic language that references violence.  In addition, the recent report of an alleged assault on a transgender student on April 15, 2010 raises concerns about the physical safety and emotional well-being of our LGBT students, staff, faculty, and administrators.   Indeed, all members of our university community are affected by these incidents, as they challenge our belief in a welcoming learning community for all individuals of diverse backgrounds.

The faculty and staff of the LGBT Task Force at CSULB seek to work collaboratively with the university to renew our shared commitment to diversity and community engagement.  In regards to the specific incidents referenced above, the LGBT Task Force acknowledges the university is in the process of responding to the homophobic dialogue surrounding the Chicana Feminism Conference and the alleged assault of the transgender student.
